PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION

The LM3100 MULTIPOINT level switch detects the
presence or lack of presence of liquid process products at specific
points within a vessel, tank or line. These independent point monitors
provide relay contacts to control or alarm systems when each level
switch detects a preset change in the presence of the process product.
The LM3100 unit consists of multiple dual element
sensing assemblies along a common probe attached to an enclosure
housing the electronics and field wiring connections.
Each element of the multi probe assembly contains
miniature RTD's (Resistance Temperature Detectors) each tightly
encased within a stainless steel tube. One element of each pair
is internally heated to establish a temperature differential above
the ambient temperature sensed by the other element. Different media
have different heat transfer coefficients. Thus, when the liquid
process product comes in contact with the heated sensor, the thermal
differential is diminished. The unheated element provides a reference
to the ambient conditions thus providing temperature compensation
over the entire operating range of -100°F to +390°F. When each dual
element assembly senses the presence of process product the temperature
difference is converted to a voltage which is compared to the adjustable
set-point reference voltage for that assembly. When the two values
are equal a relay is energized to open or close the alarm or control
contacts. Each of the MULTIPOINT switches operate independently
of each other.
